Somme Association:
‘Boy Soldiers’ script
‘Close your eyes and think of a First World War soldier. What age is he? Probably not eight years old. But that’s what age Momcilo Gavric was when he joined the Serbian army.’
This emotionally charged short film, created by the Somme Association for use in schools, tells the story of three under-age soldiers from the First World War. I was tasked with writing a script that tied three very disparate stories together seamlessly, leaving pupils with the understanding that global conflict often impacts kids just like them, as much as it does adults. This was one of two scripts I created, the other telling the incredible story of Khudadad Khan, a sepoy in the British Indian Army who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his services on the Western Front.
Work completed:
script-writing; script-editing; close collaboration with animator
What they said:
‘Scott’s script tied together three storylines which I had been struggling to combine into one cohesive animation. The work was turned around quickly and helped to shape the direction of the final product.’
